Located in the western Caribbean Sea, diving the Cayman Islands offers experiences as varied below the waves as topside. All three islands that make up this British Overseas Protectorate offer great diving opportunities, and combined have over 300 dive sites from walls to wrecks, to shallow, sandy lagoons.
Choosing which island to visit will depend on what type of diving you enjoy, and what else you would like to get out of your vacation. So here is a quick summary to help you decide.
Grand Cayman
The most westerly and also the largest of the islands, Grand Cayman is the tourist hub of the region, offering sophisticated resorts, great nightlife, and plenty of shopping and entertainment. There are often cruise ships visiting which can make the island busy at times.
Diving on Grand Cayman is great for families or groups of mixed abilities. The famous Stingray City site is located on the island's west coast peninsula as is the USS Kittiwake wreck. In fact, the entire coastline is one long stretch of 240 dive sites in calm, clear waters.
Little Cayman
Lying 80 miles to the east of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman is the least developed of the three islands and as such is a wildlife haven for seabirds, endangered iguanas, and a wealth of other diversity.
The diving here is dramatic and exciting, with over 50 sites offering plunging drop-offs, such as those at the world-famous Bloody Bay Wall. Large yellow tube sponges, large gorgonians, and some friendly groupers make diving Little Caymen's 60 dive sites a unique experience.
Cayman Brac
Just 5 miles west of Little Cayman, Cayman Brac is the smallest island in the group but offers some awesome big-ocean diving. This charming destination boasts a great mix of adrenaline activities, remote retreats, and everything in between.
Diving here offers an excellent array of walls, wrecks, and inshore dives - something for everyone. The marine life and underwater topography are equally diverse.
Where to Stay
The Cayman Islands offer visitors a variety of budget to luxury accommodations. Dive resorts in the Caymans range from self-sufficient condos for those who prefer privacy and independence, to all-inclusive packages for those seeking relaxation and convenience.
